Why does following rules or authority sometimes feel like I’m losing my freedom?

Why does following rules or authority, even when I intellectually understand their purpose (like safety regulations or societal norms), sometimes feel like I’m losing my freedom and individuality? Is it a psychological reaction to the constraint itself, regardless of the outcome? Does the feeling intensify when the rules seem arbitrary, inconsistently enforced, or when I disagree with their underlying logic? How do I reconcile the need for order and structure provided by rules with the human desire for autonomy and self-determination, and are there healthy ways to navigate this tension without becoming either blindly obedient or completely rebellious?

Answer

Following rules or authority can feel like a loss of freedom because it inherently involves constraints on individual action and autonomy. Here’s a breakdown of why this sensation arises:

1. Restriction of Choice: Rules dictate what you can and cannot do, directly limiting the available options and courses of action. This limitation feels like a loss because it removes the perceived potential for self-determination. Where you might have previously felt empowered to choose from a range of possibilities, rules narrow those choices, forcing you onto a pre-defined path.

2. External Control: Authority figures and established rules impose an external locus of control. Instead of your actions being driven by internal motivation and personal desires, they are governed by external mandates. This can feel like you’re no longer the author of your own actions, but rather a puppet responding to someone else’s commands. The sense of agency is diminished.

3. Frustration of Personal Goals: Rules, particularly those perceived as arbitrary or unnecessary, can obstruct personal goals or desires. If a rule prevents you from achieving something you value or pursuing a path that aligns with your interests, it will naturally be experienced as a restriction on your freedom. This frustration intensifies when the reasoning behind the rule is unclear or unconvincing.

4. Reduced Self-Expression: Rules can stifle individuality and self-expression. If rules demand conformity or uniformity, they may require individuals to suppress aspects of their personality, beliefs, or behaviors. This suppression can lead to feelings of inauthenticity and a sense of being forced to conform to an imposed ideal.

5. Psychological Reactance: When individuals perceive their freedom as being threatened, they may experience psychological reactance. This is a motivational state aimed at restoring the lost freedom. Reactance can manifest as resistance to the rules, defiance of authority, or a general feeling of resentment. The stronger the perceived threat to freedom, the more intense the reactance.

6. Perceived Injustice: If rules are perceived as unfair, discriminatory, or applied inconsistently, they can create a strong sense of injustice. This perception fuels the feeling of lost freedom, as individuals feel that they are being unfairly constrained compared to others. A rule that seems to benefit certain groups while disadvantaging others will invariably generate resentment and a feeling of diminished freedom.

7. Lack of Transparency and Input: When rules are imposed without explanation or consultation, individuals may feel that their autonomy is being disregarded. A lack of transparency about the reasoning behind rules can create suspicion and resentment, reinforcing the sense that freedom is being eroded. Furthermore, if individuals have no opportunity to provide input or voice their concerns, they may feel powerless and voiceless, further diminishing their sense of freedom.

8. Habituation to Freedom: Individuals who have experienced a high degree of autonomy may be more sensitive to the imposition of rules and restrictions. Accustomed to making their own choices and controlling their own destinies, they may find it particularly difficult to adapt to situations where their freedom is curtailed. The feeling of lost freedom is often amplified when it represents a significant departure from previous experiences.

9. Power Dynamics: Rules and authority are often intertwined with power dynamics. Those in positions of authority have the power to enforce rules and impose sanctions, which can create a sense of inequality and subjugation. This can lead individuals to feel that their freedom is being compromised by an imbalance of power.

Pray This Prayer

O Divine Source, Creator of all,

I come to you with a question that weighs heavy on my heart. Why does following rules or authority, even when I know they are intended for good, sometimes feel like I’m losing my freedom?

I understand the need for structure, for boundaries that protect and guide. I see how rules can create order and harmony within communities. But there’s a part of me that chafes against these structures, a yearning for autonomy and the ability to chart my own course without constraint.

Sometimes, it feels like conforming means sacrificing my individuality, silencing my unique voice, and dimming the spark of my own spirit. I worry that obedience will lead to complacency, and that following someone else’s path will prevent me from discovering my own.

Help me to understand the delicate balance between freedom and responsibility. Show me how to discern when rules are truly serving a higher purpose and when they are simply chains disguised as security. Grant me the wisdom to know when to follow and when to respectfully question, to challenge injustice, and to advocate for a more compassionate world.

Guide me to find true freedom, not in reckless abandon, but in the conscious choice to act with integrity, to love unconditionally, and to contribute to the greater good. May I learn to embrace the beauty of collaboration and the strength of community, while never losing sight of the unique and precious individual you created me to be.

Help me to see the freedom that exists within discipline, the liberation that comes from self-control, and the strength that arises from acting in alignment with my values. And above all, help me to trust in your guidance, knowing that you are always leading me towards a path of authentic freedom and fulfillment.

Amen.
