What does it mean to follow Jesus?

What does it mean to truly follow Jesus, beyond just believing in him or attending church? I’m looking for a practical, multifaceted answer. What actions, attitudes, and life changes are typically associated with following Jesus? Does it mean adhering to a specific set of rules, or is it more about a transformation of the heart and mind? How does one reconcile the teachings of Jesus with the complexities and challenges of modern life – is it about strict literal interpretation, or is there room for interpretation and application within different cultural contexts? Furthermore, how does following Jesus impact our relationships with others, our work, our use of resources, and our overall purpose in life? Does it mean sacrificing personal desires, and if so, to what extent? I’m interested in perspectives from various Christian traditions and denominations.

Answer

Following Jesus encompasses a multifaceted commitment that permeates every aspect of a person’s life. It means:

Belief and Faith: Recognizing Jesus as the Son of God, the Messiah, and the Savior of humanity, accepting his teachings, and placing trust in him for salvation. This involves a conscious decision to believe in his divinity, his death and resurrection, and his promise of eternal life.

Repentance and Conversion: Turning away from a life of sin and self-centeredness, acknowledging one’s need for forgiveness, and committing to a new path guided by Jesus’ teachings. This isn’t merely a one-time event, but an ongoing process of recognizing and addressing sin in one’s life.

Discipleship and Obedience: Learning from Jesus’ teachings, imitating his example, and obeying his commands. This involves studying the Scriptures, particularly the Gospels, to understand his life, ministry, and message. Obedience includes striving to live according to his moral principles, such as love, compassion, forgiveness, and humility.

Love and Compassion: Loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself. This love extends to all people, regardless of their background, beliefs, or social status, including those who are marginalized, oppressed, or considered enemies. It manifests in practical acts of kindness, service, and advocacy for justice.

Sacrifice and Self-Denial: Prioritizing God’s will above one’s own desires and being willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the Gospel and the well-being of others. This might involve giving up personal comforts, material possessions, or even one’s life for the sake of Christ and his kingdom.

Service and Ministry: Using one’s gifts and talents to serve others and advance God’s kingdom. This can take many forms, such as volunteering in a church or community organization, supporting missions, sharing one’s faith with others, or using one’s professional skills to address social needs.

Endurance and Perseverance: Remaining faithful to Jesus even in the face of trials, persecution, and temptation. The Christian life is not always easy, and followers of Jesus may experience hardship and suffering. However, they are called to remain steadfast in their faith, trusting in God’s promises and drawing strength from his grace.

Transformation and Growth: Allowing the Holy Spirit to transform one’s character and behavior, becoming more like Jesus over time. This involves cultivating virtues such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It’s a lifelong process of spiritual growth and maturation.

Proclamation and Witness: Sharing one’s faith with others and inviting them to follow Jesus. This involves both verbal communication and living a life that reflects the love and grace of God. It means being a witness to the transformative power of the Gospel in one’s own life and being willing to share that testimony with others.

In essence, following Jesus is a holistic commitment to living a life that is centered on him, guided by his teachings, and empowered by his Spirit, with the ultimate goal of reflecting his character and advancing his kingdom in the world.

Pray This Prayer

Heavenly Father,

I come before you today, wrestling with the question that echoes in my heart: What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? It’s more than just reciting words or attending services, I know. It’s more than just believing intellectually in your son.

Show me, Lord, what it means to walk in His footsteps. Help me understand the depth of His love, a love that compelled Him to sacrifice everything for me, for all of humanity.

Guide me to see Jesus in the faces of the marginalized, the forgotten, and the suffering. Teach me to extend compassion and offer a helping hand, just as He did. Open my heart to the poor in spirit and the meek, understanding that true strength lies in humility.

Remind me that following Jesus means embracing His teachings, even when they are difficult. Help me to forgive those who have wronged me, to turn the other cheek when faced with anger, and to love my enemies as He commanded.

Instill in me a spirit of selfless service, enabling me to put the needs of others before my own. Grant me the courage to speak truth to power, to stand up for justice, and to defend the vulnerable.

Lord, help me to live a life that reflects the light of Jesus, a life that inspires hope and points others towards you. May my actions be a testament to my faith, a living prayer that whispers of your grace and mercy.

I know I will stumble and fall, Lord. But I pray for the strength to get back up, to learn from my mistakes, and to continue striving towards a deeper, more authentic relationship with you through Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.

Amen.
