I’m trying to live a more Christ-like life, but sometimes it feels abstract. The Bible mentions so many things, and different people emphasize different aspects of Jesus’s character. Instead of trying to do everything at once, I want to focus on a few core areas. I’m not looking for theological doctrines so much as practical qualities I can actively cultivate in my daily life.
So, considering the Gospels’ depiction of Jesus’s interactions with people, his teachings, and his overall demeanor, what are the key characteristics of Jesus that I should be emulating in my own relationships, actions, and internal mindset? Specifically, what does it look like to embody these characteristics in everyday situations – at work, with family, in my community, and even when I’m alone and grappling with internal struggles? Please provide actionable examples.

Love: Jesus’s love was unconditional and extended to everyone, including enemies. It was demonstrated through his actions, such as healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and offering comfort to the grieving. This love is described in 1 Corinthians 13 and exemplified by the parable of the Good Samaritan. Emulating this means showing love, kindness, and empathy to all, regardless of their background or circumstances. This could mean volunteering time, donating to charitable causes, or simply offering a listening ear to someone in need.
Humility: Jesus, despite being divine, humbled himself to become human and serve others. He washed his disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17), a task typically performed by servants. He consistently deferred to his Father’s will and never sought personal glory. Emulating humility involves recognizing one’s limitations, acknowledging the value of others, and being willing to serve others without expecting recognition.

Heavenly Father,
I come before you humbled and seeking guidance. I long to be more like your Son, Jesus Christ, but I am often unsure where to even begin. Please illuminate my understanding of his character, and show me the key aspects of his life that I should strive to emulate.
Lord, I know Jesus was a beacon of love. Help me to love others unconditionally, as he did, even those who are difficult to love. Fill my heart with compassion and empathy, that I may see the world through his eyes and respond with kindness and forgiveness.
Jesus was also a pillar of humility. Remind me to release my ego and serve others before myself. Grant me the grace to recognize my own imperfections and to learn from my mistakes, always striving for growth in humility.
He was a model of unwavering faith. Strengthen my belief in you, Lord, even in the face of adversity. Help me to trust in your plan for my life and to surrender my will to yours.
Jesus was a powerful advocate for justice. Give me the courage to speak out against injustice and to stand up for those who are marginalized and oppressed. Guide me to use my voice and my actions to create a more equitable world.
And above all, Jesus demonstrated unwavering obedience to your will. Grant me the strength and discernment to follow your guidance in all aspects of my life, choosing your path even when it is difficult.
Lord, I know I cannot become like Jesus on my own. I need your constant help and guidance. Fill me with your Holy Spirit, that I may be transformed into his likeness, day by day.
